Karnataka Free Bus Smart Card 2026: Women & Students Can Travel Easily Across the State

The Karnataka Government has introduced the Free Bus Smart Card system to make public transport more convenient for women and eligible students under the Shakti Scheme. This initiative allows beneficiaries to travel free in government-operated non-luxury buses across Karnataka without repeatedly showing identity documents during every journey. The Smart Card acts as a digital travel pass and is expected to simplify the free travel system for lakhs of passengers.

Under this scheme, women who are permanent residents of Karnataka can apply for the Smart Card and use it while travelling in buses operated by KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC. The facility is mainly available in ordinary and express government buses. However, luxury services such as Volvo, Airavat, sleeper, and AC buses are not included under the free travel benefit.

The government introduced this Smart Card mainly to reduce delays and confusion during ticket verification. Earlier, women passengers had to show Aadhaar cards and collect zero-fare tickets during every trip. Conductors often faced difficulties during busy hours because checking identity documents for every passenger consumed extra time. With the Smart Card system, travel verification becomes faster and more organized.

The application process has been made simple through both online and offline methods. Applicants can apply online through the official Seva Sindhu portal by registering with their mobile number and Aadhaar details. After logging in, users need to select the Shakti Smart Card service, fill in personal details, upload required documents, and submit the application. An application reference number is generated for tracking the status later.

For people who are not comfortable using online services, offline applications are also available. Eligible women and students can visit nearby KSRTC or BMTC depots, collect the form, attach Aadhaar copies and photographs, and submit the application directly. After successful verification, the Smart Card is issued within a few working days.

To apply for the card, applicants generally need documents such as Aadhaar card, Karnataka residence proof, passport-size photo, and mobile number. Kannada residents are the primary beneficiaries under this scheme. The government may also verify eligibility through Aadhaar-linked databases before approval.

The Shakti Scheme has become one of Karnataka’s most popular welfare programs since its launch. Crores of free journeys have already been completed by women across the state. Many working women, students, and daily passengers have benefited from reduced travel expenses and improved access to education, employment, and public services.

The Karnataka Government believes that the Smart Card system will further improve the efficiency of public transportation. By reducing manual verification and speeding up boarding processes, the scheme aims to provide a smoother and more comfortable travel experience for passengers.
