The Government of Karnataka has introduced the Indira Food Kit Scheme as a significant welfare initiative for Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration cardholders. The scheme is being implemented as a replacement for 5 kg of the additional free rice that was previously distributed under the Anna Bhagya scheme. The decision aims to provide families with a more balanced and nutritious food basket instead of relying primarily on rice.

Under the earlier Anna Bhagya scheme, eligible beneficiaries received additional free rice as part of the state’s food security efforts. However, concerns were raised regarding the misuse of free rice and reports that some of it was being diverted to the black market. To address these issues and ensure that government assistance directly benefits families, the Karnataka government decided to restructure the food support program by introducing the Indira Food Kit.

The Indira Food Kit contains a range of essential grocery items that are commonly used in daily cooking. These include toor dal, moong dal, cooking oil, sugar, and salt. By supplying these items, the government aims to improve the nutritional intake of beneficiaries and encourage a more balanced diet. Pulses such as toor dal and moong dal are rich sources of protein, while cooking oil provides essential fats needed for healthy living. Sugar and salt are also included as basic household necessities.

One of the notable features of the scheme is that the quantity of food items provided depends on the size of the beneficiary’s family. This ensures a more equitable distribution of resources. Families with one to two members will receive 0.5 kg of each item included in the kit. Households with three to four members will be provided 1 kg of each item, while families consisting of five or more members will receive 1.5 kg of each item. This family-size-based approach helps ensure that larger households receive additional support according to their needs.

The primary objective of the Indira Food Kit Scheme is to improve food and nutritional security among economically weaker sections of society. Instead of providing only rice, the government is focusing on supplying a variety of food products that contribute to a healthier diet. This shift is expected to benefit millions of low-income families across Karnataka.

Another important benefit of the scheme is its potential to reduce monthly household expenses. According to government estimates, eligible families may save between ₹500 and ₹1,000 per month on grocery purchases. By replacing part of the rice distribution with a food kit system, the state estimates savings of approximately ₹300 crore per month.
