The Karnataka Government is planning a major financial empowerment initiative for women benefiting under the Gruha Lakshmi Scheme. Through a newly proposed women-focused cooperative banking system, beneficiaries may soon become eligible for loans ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹3 lakh by saving just ₹200 every month. The initiative aims to help women achieve financial independence and support self-employment opportunities across the state.
Under this proposal, women enrolled in the Gruha Lakshmi Scheme will be encouraged to become members of a cooperative financial network managed mainly for and by women. To join, beneficiaries are expected to contribute a small monthly saving of ₹200 along with a one-time membership fee. After maintaining regular savings for a few months, members can apply for low-interest loans to start or expand small businesses.
The government believes this system can help lakhs of women who struggle to get financial support from traditional banks. Many women in rural and urban areas depend on private money lenders who charge very high interest rates. Through this cooperative model, loans are expected to be provided at affordable interest rates, making repayment easier and reducing financial burden on families.
Women can use these loans for various income-generating activities such as tailoring, dairy farming, grocery shops, handicrafts, beauty parlours, food businesses, agriculture-related work, and other self-employment opportunities. Officials say the scheme is designed to improve the economic condition of women and encourage them to build stable sources of income instead of depending only on monthly government assistance.
One of the most important features of the proposed initiative is that loans may be offered without demanding heavy collateral or property documents. This could especially benefit low-income women who usually face difficulties while applying for bank loans. The process is also expected to be simple and digitally managed, allowing beneficiaries to apply through local offices or women welfare departments.
Reports suggest that the government is considering directly transferring ₹1,800 to beneficiaries while depositing ₹200 into their cooperative savings account every month. Over time, this savings amount could help women build financial discipline and become eligible for larger loans and additional benefits.
The Karnataka Government has stated that the purpose of the Gruha Lakshmi Scheme is not only to provide monthly financial support but also to create long-term economic security for women. By combining savings with accessible loans, the government hopes to create stronger financial opportunities for lakhs of families across the state.
If implemented successfully, this initiative could become one of Karnataka’s biggest women empowerment programs. A small monthly saving of ₹200 may help women access larger financial support in the future, improve their livelihoods, and become self-reliant entrepreneurs.
