The Government of India continues to strengthen maternal welfare through the popular ₹6000 Mother Card incentive scheme, aimed at providing financial assistance to pregnant women and new mothers. This scheme is primarily implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, along with support from various state-level programs.
Under this initiative, eligible women receive financial aid of up to ₹5,000–₹6,000 directly into their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The scheme focuses on ensuring better nutrition, proper medical care, and financial stability during pregnancy. It especially benefits women from economically weaker sections who may otherwise struggle to afford healthcare and rest during this critical period.
The amount is distributed in multiple installments based on key milestones. The first installment is given after early pregnancy registration, the second after completing antenatal checkups, and the final payment is released after childbirth and the baby’s first immunization. This structured approach ensures that mothers stay connected with healthcare services throughout their pregnancy journey.
The “Mother Card” plays a crucial role in this scheme. It acts as an official health record issued at Anganwadi centers or government hospitals, tracking the mother’s medical visits, nutrition status, and vaccination schedules. It also serves as proof to claim financial benefits under the scheme.
To apply, pregnant women must register at their nearest Anganwadi center or government health facility. Assistance is provided by ASHA and Anganwadi workers. Applicants need basic documents such as Aadhaar card, bank account details, and pregnancy registration proof.
In addition to the central scheme, states like Karnataka also offer extra support through programs like the Mathrushree Scheme, which provides similar financial assistance to improve maternal health outcomes.
This initiative has significantly contributed to increasing institutional deliveries, reducing maternal health risks, and promoting awareness about prenatal and postnatal care.
