Karnataka Government Launches Sewing Machine Distribution Scheme for Backward Classes

Bengaluru: In a move aimed at promoting self-employment and economic independence among economically weaker sections, the D. Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Development Corporation has announced the implementation of a sewing machine distribution scheme for the current financial year.

The initiative, introduced as part of a self-reliance program, seeks to empower individuals from backward communities by providing them with sewing machines, enabling them to generate income through tailoring and related activities. The scheme is expected to benefit a large number of eligible applicants across Karnataka, particularly those from rural and semi-urban areas.

Eligibility Criteria Defined

According to official guidelines, the scheme is specifically designed for individuals belonging to Backward Classes Categories 1, 2A, 3A, and 3B. However, certain communities have been excluded from eligibility. These include groups such as Vishwakarma, Uppara, Ambiga, Savita, Madivala, nomadic and semi-nomadic communities, as well as Okkaliga, Lingayat, Kadugolla, Hattigolla, Maratha, and their respective sub-castes.

Authorities clarified that the exclusion is based on predefined classification norms under the corporation’s welfare framework.

Income and Age Limits

To ensure the scheme reaches the most deserving beneficiaries, strict income criteria have been set. Applicants from rural areas must have an annual family income below ₹98,000, while those residing in urban areas must have an income below ₹1,20,000.

Additionally, the age of applicants must fall between 18 and 50 years, ensuring that beneficiaries are within a working age group capable of utilizing the support effectively for livelihood generation.

Focus on Self-Reliance

Officials emphasized that the primary objective of the scheme is to encourage self-employment and skill-based income generation. By providing sewing machines, the government aims to support individuals—especially women—in starting small tailoring businesses from home, thereby improving their financial stability.

The scheme aligns with the broader vision of the Karnataka government to promote entrepreneurship among backward classes and reduce dependency on traditional employment sources.

Application and Implementation

Eligible candidates are expected to apply through the official channels of the corporation. The selection process will be based on verification of caste, income, and other required documents. Once approved, beneficiaries will receive sewing machines under the scheme.

Authorities have also urged applicants to avoid unofficial websites or agents and rely only on authentic government sources for application and updates.

The sewing machine distribution scheme by the D. Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Development Corporation is seen as a significant step towards uplifting economically weaker sections and fostering self-reliance. By targeting eligible backward class communities with clear criteria, the initiative aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and improve the overall socio-economic condition of beneficiaries across the state.
