In a major step toward empowering women and promoting entrepreneurship, the Karnataka government has introduced the “Akka Cafe Project”, a unique initiative designed to help women start and manage their own food businesses. This scheme is especially beneficial for women who wish to earn independently but are held back by financial constraints.
Many women, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, aspire to start a small business and support their families financially. However, the biggest challenge they face is lack of capital. Addressing this issue, the government has come forward with financial assistance and training under the Akka Cafe Project, making it easier for women to turn their business dreams into reality.

What is the Akka Cafe Project?
The Akka Cafe Project aims to transform women into entrepreneurs by enabling them to run modern, well-equipped cafes. These cafes are fully managed by women and offer a range of food items, functioning like mini restaurants. The initiative has already seen success in cities like Bengaluru, Bidar, Karwar, and Mysuru, where several cafes are operating successfully and receiving positive customer feedback.
Financial Assistance and Benefits
One of the key highlights of the scheme is the financial support provided by the government. Eligible women groups can receive funding of up to ₹15 lakh to set up a cafe, including expenses for infrastructure, utensils, furniture, and other essentials. This removes the burden of arranging initial capital and allows women to focus on running the business efficiently.
The government has set an ambitious target of establishing 2,500 Akka Cafes across the state, ensuring widespread employment and income opportunities for women.
Food and Services Offered
These cafes are not limited to serving tea and coffee. They offer a variety of affordable and hygienic food items such as idli, vada, upma, dosa, pulao, and other regional dishes. The cafes typically operate from 9 AM to 9 PM, and are entirely managed by women, ensuring both quality and consistency.
Free Training for Applicants
A common concern among aspiring entrepreneurs is the lack of experience in running a business. To address this, the government provides free training programs in collaboration with the Coffee Board. Women are trained in coffee preparation, customer service, and business management. Nearly one lakh women are expected to benefit from this training initiative.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Akka Cafe Project, there is one important condition: applicants must be part of a registered Self Help Group (SHG). This includes members of groups such as Stree Shakti Sangha, Dharmasthala Sangha, or other recognized local SHGs. Individual applications are not allowed; only groups can apply.
How to Apply
Interested women groups can apply through their Taluk Panchayat or District Panchayat offices. Applications are invited periodically, and groups must submit the required documents along with a formal proposal. The government has allocated ₹25 crore for this scheme this year, so early application is encouraged.
Final Word
The Akka Cafe Project is a golden opportunity for women to become financially independent and build a sustainable livelihood. Women are encouraged to join a Self Help Group if they are not already members and take advantage of such government schemes. Sharing this information with others can help more women benefit and achieve economic empowerment.
